Recipe: Bitter Lemon Soda

This is very much like Krest® Bitter Lemon (found in Africa) or Schweppes® Bitter Lemon (found in Europe). Unfortunately there is nothing comparable found in the USA, but this comes pretty darn close This is the perfect thirst quencher for a blistering hot day

Bitter Lemon Soda Ingredients

  • 1? cups white sugar

  • 1? cups water

  • 1 lemon, zested

  • 2 sprigs fresh lavender

  • 3 cups lemon juice

  • 4 cups ice cubes, or as needed

  • 1 (11 fluid ounce) bottle cold tonic water, or more as needed

How to Make Bitter Lemon Soda

  1. Combine sugar, water, lemon zest, and lavender in a pot and cover; bring to a boil. Cook mixture until sugar is dissolved, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove pot from heat and cool syrup to room temperature, about 15 minutes.

  2. Pour lemon juice into a pitcher, strain syrup into lemon juice, and stir until concentrate is evenly mixed. Refrigerate concentrate until chilled, at least 1 hour.

  3. Fill serving glasses with ice and pour about 2 ounces concentrate into each glass; top with tonic water and stir.

  • The lavendar came a day later and I added a touch. Its very good. Ill continue to experiment with it. Its much better than regular G&T S BUT NOT QUITE THE BITTER LEMON EXPERIENCE YET.

  • I ended up using mint instead of lavender, and it turned out tartly refreshing Ill definitely make it again (or at least use the syrup as a base for some lemonade).

This is simply a mislabelled recipe for Italian lemonade.It needs quinineTwo ways to go about it - instead of water and sugar pour quality tonic water, Schweppes, White Rock, Canada dry, or the more upscale Qtonic or Fever tree. Measure out the sugar proportionately based on tonic water sugar content.You can also buy tonic concentrate and add sparkling water of your choice, in my case Perrier. You can also go with non-carbonated water if you prefer non-sparkling.

  • Rave reviews whenever I serve this to family and friends. I am growing lavender this year and cant wait to add it to my favorite warm weather beverage.
