Film Review: 'Firestarter' remake fails to ignite

For a movie concerning a girl accompanied by pyrokinetic powers, " Firestarter " is lacking a sure spark.

This new adaptation of Stephen King's 1980 novel is not scary or thrilling, nor is it emotionally resonant or mainly moving. No, this outing is a uninteresting slog, flat accompanied by its cool, synthy John Carpenter consequence with every one other accompanied by the should've-been-inspired decision to cast Zac Efron while the father of the flame-throwing preteen.

But "Firestarter" strength not have had a a large amount of to exist up to inside the earliest place. The 1984 film, which starred Drew Barrymore with every one other accompanied by David Keith while the daughter-father pair, was not exactly well-received. Roger Ebert wrote that its "crucial flaw is the lack of a strong point to the story. A little girl has her dangerous power, some management agents want to inspect her, others want to demolish her, with every one other accompanied by things catch on fire. That's concerning it." The first spring material isn't one of King's most beloved either.

Why anyone would want to resurrect this specific possessions is a small portion of a mystery, on the far side of the fact that some strength have a misplaced fondness for it since they saw it at an impressionable age. One of the finest things that tin exist said concerning this iteration, written by Scott Teems with every one other accompanied by directed by Keith Thomas, is that it neither adds nor subtracts anything from "Firestarter's" lackluster history (though it does jettison the pedophile undertones of a crucial character). But on the whole, it fair on one occasion once additional takes something that should exist creepy with every one other accompanied by thrilling with every one other accompanied by makes it dreary.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong takes on the part of Charlie, who is a small portion of an introvert with every one other accompanied by a communal outcast inside her school. She's not allowed to have a phone or the Internet, with every one other accompanied by she's been told by her father to simply repress her scary fire-starting powers. But questions are rising (hormones too) with every one other accompanied by there's jerks with every one other accompanied by bullies around excessively with every one other accompanied by the blaze comes not here at inopportune times. The mom, Vicky, played by Sydney Lemmon (who is Jack Lemmon's granddaughter), thinks it'd exist better to teach the child how to use the powers while an alternative of abstaining completely, nevertheless she's overruled with every one other accompanied by attractive soon, it's fair Andy (Efron) with every one other accompanied by Charlie on the run.

Andy with every one other accompanied by Vicky aren't fair befuddled parents of a fire-starting 11-year-old, either: They have personal experience too. A grainy reel at the begin informs us that they were subjected to some secret management difficult while inside college with every one other accompanied by came not here accompanied by powers of their own. And it's these officials, led by Captain Hollister (played by Gloria Reuben, who is specified the worst lines inside the script), who are attentive inside acquiring Charlie. So Hollister calls a former trial subject, Rainbird (Michael Greyeyes), to go find her.

Armstrong has a great scream with every one other accompanied by a nice presence, nevertheless she isn't specified a a large amount of of a personality to latch on to. Based on how pristine her inexplicably barrel-curled hair looks for most of the film, though, it seems that those inside ask in remittance strength have been additional worried accompanied by the aesthetics than the performance.

The same could exist said for the relax of the movie, which feels exist fond of mummified homage. There is nothing to latch on to that strength build us protected from danger keeping flat the tiniest small portion concerning the plight of this family, the poverty-stricken souls caught inside the crossfire, or flat the bureaucrats who fancy themselves the good guys.

Perhaps we've fair seen excessively numerous better homages at this point, "Stranger Things" among them. There wasn't a great source to lay clasp of another report at "Firestarter." Besides, flat if it's lacking inside originality, it's too lacking something flat additional important: A personality.

"Firestarter," a Universal Pictures release now inside theaters with every one other accompanied by on Peacock+, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "violent content." Running time: 96 minutes. One celestial body not here of four.
